Purple Monster: from children's TV to conference design
Alan Heap · Founding Director, Purple Monster
"I'm easily distracted and prefer to settle at the piano than my laptop."
The business
Alan Heap is the founding director of Purple Monster, a creative practice that designs and runs conferences, events and workshops to help organisations connect people and drive change. He brings a background in emotional intelligence, behaviour change and improvisation, and writes about conference design and culture.
Before Purple Monster he was a BBC TV and radio assistant producer, and played the lead in the children's TV show Dizzy Heights Hotel.
Outside work
Away from work, Alan would rather be at the piano. He also writes poetry, and is part of the curation team for TEDxLeamingtonSpa.
What Mill Street changed
Alan has a resident desk, and he has never taken to working from home. For him, one of the best things about membership is the flexibility to come and go: "Separating work from home, especially on a Sunday eve, and nipping to Mill Street for an hour or two, has been a godsend. That said, it's much more fun when the place is buzzing, and the coffee shop is open."
In 2025 he spoke at Mill Street's Winning on Your Doorstep event.
