Rooost: accommodation for construction crews, sold through friendships
Luke Broadhurst · Head of Marketing, Rooost
"As the team has grown, the space has flexed with us, adding desks and meeting rooms at the pace the business needed rather than the pace a conventional lease would have allowed."
The business
Rooost books and manages accommodation for crews on construction and infrastructure sites: a problem most people never think about, until a crew's accommodation falls through days before a job starts. Founder Luke Norman started it with a big ambition: £50m in annual recurring revenue. Luke Broadhurst is Rooost's Head of Marketing.
Rooost also writes about the industry's hard truths, from 507 construction worker deaths a year in the UK to skills shortages and the mental health crisis in offshore wind.
Biggest win
Selling through friendship funnels: relationships Luke Norman keeps up for six years or more, which turn into work when a client hits a crisis. He looks after 14 of them across the North, and Rooost charges 12% above market. One early LinkedIn lead alone was worth more than £15,000.
What Mill Street changed
The Rooost team at 1 Mill Street has grown steadily and now covers operations, outbound sales and marketing. The plan from here: "bigger projects, more crews looked after, and a standing request for 1MS to keep a few spare desks warm or an office at this rate!"
